PUGAT – Pusula Güvenlik Araştırmaları Topluluğu (Compass Security Research Community) is an independent, non-profit community founded in 2021 that publishes from Europe on security, migration and society.
Why we exist
Security is usually discussed in the language of states, armies and intelligence services. We try to take a step back and look at the issue through the eyes of the individual: How safe do people feel in the society they live in? What rights does a migrant have in their new country, and what risks do they face? How does a law, a military operation or a disinformation campaign affect ordinary people’s lives?
In recent years, unlawful practices and growing authoritarianism in Turkey have led many people to migrate to Europe. PUGAT’s current priority is to provide the reliable information these people need in their new lives and to bring Europe’s security agenda to our readers.
What we publish
We group our articles under six main topics: Security, Migration and Integration, Law and Human Rights, Society and Politics, Cyber and Digital and Life Stories.
We state the type of every article clearly: an Analysis brings together facts and sources; a Commentary reflects the author’s opinion; a Guide provides practical, up-to-date information; Essays, Portraits, Q&A, Interviews and Country Letters approach topics from different angles. We cover larger subjects in series of consecutive articles. Our monthly newsletter, Compass of the Month, summarises the highlights of Europe’s society, security and migration agenda.
How we work
- Independence: We have no organisational ties to any political party, state, company or religious body. Editorial decisions are made by our editors alone.
- Verification: We support factual claims with sources and list them at the end of each article. We keep opinion and fact apart.
- Transparency: When we make a mistake, we correct it and note the correction in the article. Our Editorial Principles explain for which tasks, and within which limits, we use artificial intelligence tools.
- Non-profit: PUGAT is not a commercial business. Our site carries no advertising or sponsored content.
Content from the countries
Articles prepared by contributors living in different European countries are, where necessary, published under a byline naming the country rather than the person (for example “PUGAT Germany”). Like all other articles, they are reviewed by our editors.
